HERS / ECC testing for AC and furnace replacement

A straight system replacement in California still triggers Title 24 verification. For most change-outs that means duct leakage, airflow and refrigerant charge, done in a single visit once the new system is running.

Why a change-out needs testing

Homeowners are often surprised by this one, and installers end up explaining it. When a permitted HVAC system is replaced, the state wants proof that the new equipment was installed to perform, and that the ducts it is connected to are not leaking a large share of the air into the attic.

The city inspector closes the permit only once the registered ECC certificates are in. That is the step we handle.

What we test on a typical change-out

Duct leakage on the existing ducts, airflow across the new coil, and refrigerant charge on split systems and heat pumps. Depending on the equipment and the Title 24 report there may be a fan watt check as well. For a single system it is one visit.

Old ducts are where change-outs fail. Connections that have not been touched in thirty years are the usual culprit, and that is worth knowing about before the homeowner hears it at final.

Built around the installer

We schedule around your install date, test once the system is running, and send the report and certificate the same day so you can call for final. Give us a lockbox code and you do not have to be there.

How it works

  1. 1Tell us about the job

Address, scope, and where you are in the permit. Two minutes by phone or text.

  2. 2We schedule around your build

Rough and QII while the framing is open, final once the system runs.

  3. 3Testing on site

Calibrated equipment and a straight answer on the spot.

  4. 4Report and registration

Report plus the signed CHEERS certificate, the same day.

Common questions

Do I need HERS testing just to replace an AC?

In most cases yes. A permitted system replacement in California triggers Title 24 verification of duct leakage, airflow and refrigerant charge.

Is it one visit or two?

Usually one, once the new system is installed and running.

Why do change-outs fail the duct test?

Usually the existing ducts. Old connections and crushed runs leak, and the new equipment does not change that.
